Trauma Healing for Everyone - 4 Sessions

Class Introduction:

People often associate the term “trauma” with serious events such as car accidents, terrorist attacks, wars, sexual assaults, and domestic violence.  For many people, trauma can also result from a lack of emotional connection during their childhood, not feeling loved, being constantly compared to and ridiculed by parents.  Even seemingly insignificant interactions can trigger trauma reactions, influencing how they view themselves and others and relationships with others.  For example, they may feel very insecure, believe that they cannot do anything well, and feel that no one will like them.

These traumatic episodes not only affect how we see ourselves and others but also impact our physical  bodies.  As Canadian physician Gabor Mate puts it, “Trauma is not what happens to you...it is what happens inside you as a result of what happened to you” When our bodies feel threatened, we go into a “fight or flight” response, or we may shut down and freeze.  When we experience these painful events frequently during our developmental years,  our nervous system more accustomed to these states. Even if you have grown up, your nervous system may still maintain the same template, making it easy for you to enter into fight or flight, shutdown, or freeze modes, which can cause feelings of panic, agitation, depression, anxiety, and so on."

I believe that no matter what beliefs, behaviors, or physical states trouble us now, they are all survival mechanisms that developed in the past to help us survive.  As humans, we have the power to change, heal and explore.  The course ‘Trauma Healing for Everyone’ aims to help students explore themselves, understand what happened to them, and move toward healing and change.  The course will explain what

trauma is, Trauma-Informed, how trauma affects the body, Polyvagal theory, and inner family system therapy theory, etc. students understand their original family, clarify how they currently deal with their emotions, and gain awareness of their own nervous system template.  Through this process, they can get to know their inner selves and learn to love themselves again andheal themselves.  The course incorporates different learning modes such as lectures, experiential activities, small group discussion and sharing, etc.,  to help students understand and apply this knowledge.
