Course Introduction

When we think of the Tao Te Ching, an image of carefree leisure, with peaceful tranquility, purity, and effortless inaction (wu wei), immediately comes to mind. As a result, we may assume that Daoist philosophy is an outdated classical thought, disconnected from our fast-paced, profit-driven modern world.

However, we often overlook the fact that the Tao Te Ching was born in the turbulent Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods—a time of great upheaval and transformation in ancient China. We also forget that Emperor Gaozu of Han, despite his disadvantaged position, successfully overturned the odds and established an empire that lasted for 800 years, largely by relying on Daoist principles. In fact, during the early years of his reign, governance was influenced by Huang-Lao Daoism (a combination of teachings from the Huangdi Neijing and Tao Te Ching). In other words, the true nature of Daoist thought may be far more pragmatic and politically astute than we often assume.

When it comes to Daoist philosophy, many intriguing and mysterious speculations swirl in our minds… Daoism emphasizes wu wei (effortless action), seeing in this very wu wei the possibility of doing everything without force (wu wei er wu bu wei). It advocates for softness, exploring the idea that softness and gentleness inevitably triumph over rigidity and strength (rou ruo sheng gang qiang). Daoism stresses non-contention, yet it reveals a principle where one who does not contend cannot be contested by anyone (fu wei bu zheng, gu tianxia mo neng yu zhi zheng). Finally, Daoism emphasizes simplicity, but this simplicity is never truly simple. It is a sophisticated approach that governs the complex through the simple, and controls the tangible through the intangible (xu er bu qu, dong er yu chu). All of this seems to run counter to the mainstream modern values that advocate for action, strength, competition, and complexity.

However, if Daoism truly offers a form of extreme wisdom through reverse thinking, if there is indeed a life strategy based on the principle of opposites and harmony, then what could it be? What might it look like? How can we understand it? How can we apply it? This is precisely the life philosophy that this course aims to teach you. Over the four-week course, Professor Ji Jinqing will use concrete and lively examples from history, business warfare, education, life, and trends in technological development… to show you in a clear and engaging way that it is in times like ours that the wisdom of Daoist thought is on the verge of an explosive breakthrough.
