Starry, starry night (繁星熠熠的夜晚)
Paint your palette blue and gray (彩繪著你調色盤裡的藍與灰)
Look out on a summer’s day (探頭望向夏日)
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul

【Art Appreciation Journey】(4 Sessions)
Teacher: Carol Wu
【Class Introduction & Agenda】
1) The Origin of Western Art – Greek Mythology and Gods
From ancient Greece to the present, Greek mythology has always been a subject for artists’ creations. To understand the content of Western paintings, one must first grasp Greek mythology. Greek mythology shapes Western thought, nature Western culture and art, and influences Western lifestyle. In addition to explaining the origins of the twelve main Greek gods, the lecture will also teach how to “appreciate famous paintings without assistance” by identifying the Greek gods depicted in the paintings.
2) Famous Artists Series (I): Genius or Madman – Salvador Dali
Is Dali a genius or a madman? Despite his exaggerated behavior and a lifetime of controversy, it’s hard to deny his creativity and artistic talent, which have earned him admiration and love. The lecture will present this surrealist painter who traversed between reality and dreams, weaving a fascinating life through his unique artworks.
3) Famous Artists Series (II): Burning Soul – Vincent van Gogh
In just over a decade of his artistic career, van Gogh burned his fervent soul, infusing his lifelong beliefs into each artwork. Beneath the intense colors and distorted brushstrokes lies his sensitive and sorrowful inner world. Although widely beloved today, he only sold one painting during his lifetime, showcasing talent but not finding acceptance in the world. Let’s listen to van Gogh’s story and feel the beauty and sorrow within his paintings.
4) Louvre Masterpieces Appreciation
The Louvre houses approximately 400,000 art pieces, serving as a flagship museum of French culture and a spiritual symbol for museums worldwide. The artworks in the museum represent stories and reflect the social cultural background of their time.
“Liberty Leading the People” reflects the spirit of France fighting for freedom.
“The Raft of Medusa” tells a tragic and realistic story.
“Marie Antoinette Arriving at the Port of Marseille” depicts the queen’s life of inaction, testing the wisdom of the painter.
“The Coronation of Napoleon” portrays the grand scene of Napoleon’s coronation as a delicate and realistic court treasure.
“Portrait of Louis XIV” shows how the trendsetting dandy of Paris dressed at that time.
In this lecture, as a guide, we will introduce how the artworks in the Louvre tell their own stories.
